Research Interests

I have been studying thermal spray coatings, 3D printing, and non-destructive evaluation (NDE). Thermal spraying has been usually used for a protective coating for harsh environment such as thermal barrier, corrosion and wear resistant coatings. Also recent new thermal spray processes such as cold spraying and warm spraying have very interesting possibilities to use for repair of structural materials. It is of crucial importance to understand the microstructure of the fabricated materials and the mechanical properties and performances. NDE researches are also quite important technologies to understand the process and to assure the reliability of the developed materials. Detection of material degradation has been studied by various sensing techniques such as ultrasonic and laser-ultrasonic, terahertz wave technology, and X-ray computed tomography.
By developing novel additive manufacturing processes and sensing techniques, in near future, I want to develop smart materials, which can sense degradation and failure in themselves and can prevent further damage evolution by themselves. With the aid of computation material science and data science, “materials integration”, we accelerate our research progress and challenge to develop innovative smart materials.
