On Tuesday, October 1, the Autumn Entrance Ceremony of the Department of Advanced Interdisciplinary Studies for the 2024 academic year was held in a hybrid format, both in-person at ENEOS Hall and online.
The Ceremony started with Professor Hirochika Sumino, Deputy Manager of the Department of Advanced Interdisciplinary Studies, giving a congratulatory address. Prof. Sumino emphasized the importance of innovative thinking and collaboration across disciplines for the sustainable development of society. Highlighting his own work in geochemistry, Prof. Sumino illustrated how diverse scientific approaches contribute to understanding and mitigating natural disasters. He told the students to make use of the broad academic resources of the department to foster innovation and encouraged them to be curious, resilient, and collaborative in their academic and future professional endeavors.
Professor Masakazu SUGIYAMA, director of Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology (RCAST), discussed the significance of interdisciplinary research in addressing complex global issues such as maintaining environment and biodiversity. He pointed out that artificial intelligence is surpassing humans in its ability to superficially summarize existing knowledge to answer certain questions, but that it cannot generate ideas beyond the boundaries of known information. He advised the new students to use AI as a tool for efficiency, but to focus on fostering real connections among humans to bring about deep insights and new discoveries that cannot be obtained through AI. He underscored the necessity of integrating diverse disciplines and thinking holistically to develop innovative solutions that address the intricate problems of today's world.
