Nine students from Germany' s Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich (LMU) visited the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology (RCAST) on September 10 as part of the University of Tokyo's exchange program with the German university. After touring the Kanzaki Laboratory, Nakamura and Iwabuchi Laboratory and Segawa Laboratory, the visitors received an introduction to RCAST by Director Yoshiaki Nakano. The students, whose specializations include physics, medicine, information science and law, listened attentively to each lab introduction and joined in lively question-and-answer sessions.
The University of Tokyo - LMU Seminar exchange program was started by Professor Hikaru Tsuji, professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo and honorary senator at University of Munich, to encourage open interaction among students of the two institutions. Run on various academic levels in a range of fields, the program has invited around ten LMU students almost every summer since 1997 for a cultural exchange with students studying German in the University of Tokyo Liberal Arts Program. Now, in addition to this program, twice each year groups of the University of Tokyo students studying German language have the opportunity to visit LMU on a one-week program for further interaction with German students.
With these exchange programs, the University hopes to encourage a spirit of academic collaboration through joint research and study by students of differing fields at both universities.
