The University of Tokyo's Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology (RCAST, headed by Director Yoshiaki NAKANO) and France's National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) together held an opening ceremony for the new LIA Next PV office, a center for joint research on next generation solar technology and other new energies, at the RCAST Environment and Energy Research Building on October 5.
The center, established following a general collaborative agreement between RCAST and CNRS on May 24 of this year, will focus not only on photovoltaic power, but also on other new energy research, such as bioenergy and storage of solar energy. Headed by a full-time French coordinator, this research laboratory will initiate collaboration with researchers from within and outside of the University and with other research institutions.
The LIA Next PV is the third collaborative laboratory to be established under the agreement between the French and Japanese institutions. It follows creation of the Laboratory for Integrated Micro-Mechatronic Systems (LIMMS) at the Institute of Industrial Science and the Japanese French Laboratory for Informatics (JFLI) at the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology.
The opening ceremony was attended by eight representatives of the French government and CNRS, including Roger GENET of France's Ministry of Higher Education and Research and Dr. Minh-Ha PHAM-DELEGUE, head of the Asia-Pacific section at CNRS. As the agreement extends throughout the University, more than 20 participants from across the University of Tokyo attended the event, including Executive Vice President Takao SHIMIZU. Yoshiaki NAKANO, head of the Institute of Industrial Science, and Masami HAGIYA, Dean of the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, were also present, representing the first two Japanese-French collaborative laboratories.
In their opening remarks, guests to the event expressed their expectations for new energy technologies and for enhancing Japanese-French collaboration on advanced, innovative fields of research by CNRS and the University of Tokyo. Faculty members representing the various centers involved in the Japanese-French collaborative efforts introduced their research as well. In regard to those presentations, the French participants commented, ""We are extremely impressed by the high standard of the research being conducted at Todai. We have great hope for further accomplishments from future research activities.""
The ceremony began with welcoming remarks by five participants.
