On Sept. 5, Mr.Daigo Terutsuki, a third-year doctoral student in the Department of Advanced Interdisciplinary Studies, won the VDEC Design Awards Expectation Prize of the VDEC Designers Forum 2017.

About research

Amid the growing needs for odorant detections, our group developed the odorant sensor elements with high sensitivity and selectivity based on Sf21 insect cells expressing insect odorant receptors (ORs). In this forum, we proposed a novel bio-hybrid electronic odorant sensor, termed Odor-Sensitive Field Effect Transistor (OSFET), which can detect odorant responses of the expressed insect ORs as electrical signals. This sensor has high selectivity, satisfactory reusability and a great potential for developing CMOS high-density odorant sensors without requiring complex electrophysiological methods or a fluorescence microscope. We plan to improve the sensitivity of the sensor and consider the detection mechanism for developing practical odorant sensors.
