Tackling the offshore wind sector through academia-industry collaboration

The facility was established in May 2024 as a hub for cooperation with domestic and international academic institutions, associations, organizations, and companies involved in wind power, particularly offshore wind power. Its mission is to actively develop and promote the energy sector, which plays a role in the formation of a sustainable social system by actively utilizing renewable energy in a rich natural environment, and to promote initiatives to foster the human resources of the future through appropriate connections between industry, government, and academia from a global perspective.

The field of wind power is not only a field of mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering in the field of energy technology but also a field of electronic informatics and AI due to the development of communications DX, a field of science including meteorology, a field of law and economics, a field of environment and ecology related to environmental conservation, a field of sociology related to social acceptance in the region where the wind power is located, and a field of engineering. In recent years, the development of offshore wind power has led to its involvement in several academic fields, including the marine field.

While wind power is a promising decarbonized energy source that does not rely on fossil resources, it involves a large-scale mechanical structure with rotating blades that are larger than those of aircraft and require careful implementation in the natural environment. While there are high hopes for floating offshore wind turbines, which can be in operation for more than 20 years, there are several issues that need to be resolved for wind power generation systems that are compatible with the natural environment, contribute to the development of the region in which they are located and to industrial development, and ensure energy security. To ensure carbon neutrality and deliver a sustainable social system to future generations, it is necessary to make offshore wind power generation independent in Japan, a maritime nation, and promote its appropriate development. The affiliated facility connects diverse research fields and stakeholders globally, encouraging activities such as joint research, educational collaboration, regional cooperation, and the development of collaborative areas.
