Art design that elevates hidden value to the mainstream
A new concept of art design is being developed. Its goal is a world where everyone thrives, and where it is understood that everything is connected and supports each other. This idea of interconnectedness is aimed to become a main value in society.
Let's look at green energy as an example. Most people know renewable energy is important. But in daily life, green energy is not often chosen over fossil fuels. Why? Because the current economy doesn't fully value sustainability when it comes to energy. Things like cutting CO2 emissions don't seem to directly affect "us" right now; their real importance feels far off in the future. These are what are called "hidden values." When these values are hidden, working towards a sustainable future, something everyone should care about, often gets pushed aside and becomes a concern only for a small group of people.
But people are not only driven by practical needs. For example, if travel was just about moving cheaply, everyone would pick a small, fuel-efficient car. Yet, some people value the beauty and experience of driving a luxury car. Similarly, while cheap, mass-produced food provides nutrition, many prefer the taste and quality of organically grown food. So, how can this appreciation for beauty and enjoyment be brought into the world of energy? It is believed that pioneers in art design – those who understand human emotions and instincts in ways beyond words, and who see the true essence in unique things – need to work closely with engineers and business leaders. Only then can these "hidden values" be unlocked and transformed into something beautiful and important for everyone, bringing them into the mainstream.
Design is being used to solve complex societal problems. Design isn't just about technical engineering; it also has a strong artistic side. It's this artistic side, appealing to our emotions and senses, that can truly reveal "hidden values." In this collaborative research unit, people who want to bring long-term values into society come together. They are guided by world-renowned art designers. Everyone is helped to discover their own natural ability for art design and to improve how they communicate in ways that touch people's hearts. Through these efforts, a space is aimed to be created where new ideas constantly emerge, inspiring people to naturally seek out and appreciate "hidden values" as forms of "beauty.".
