Research Interests

This field was established with the aim of building upon 20 years of administrative experience in the Tokyo Metropolitan Government—particularly in educational administration—as well as practical experience gained through the Advanced Education Outreach Lab (AEO), launched in April 2021 at the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology (RCAST), the University of Tokyo, and further developing these into research and human resource development in higher education.

This field focuses on the concept of an “educational ecosystem,” in which diverse stakeholders collaborate and co-create, as a mechanism for realizing rich, interdisciplinary learning exemplified by inquiry-based learning and STEAM education. In addition, we place particular emphasis on the role and functions of “coordinators,” who possess a form of implicit or facilitative leadership that drives such initiatives.

The competencies required of coordinators extend beyond bridging secondary and higher education; in today’s context of increasing interdisciplinarity, they are also essential for individuals engaged in a wide range of activities, including policy development and the resolution of complex societal challenges.

Through various research projects, this field aims to design educational systems and cultivate the individuals who sustain them. At the same time, we seek to develop doctoral-level professionals who, grounded in advanced knowledge, can exercise leadership and pioneer new policies and initiatives in education, the public sector, and beyond. We also welcome working professionals who wish to engage in research as affiliated researchers through commissioned or collaborative research projects.

For reference, in addition to RCAST, at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS), where I hold a cross-appointment, I am involved in establishing an integrated undergraduate–master’s program within the Global Innovation Design Institute. Following its launch, the Mori Laboratory at TUFS plans to accept master’s students.
