Research on Individually Optimal Learning
Many people feel that Japan's current education system must be changed. However, it is not easy to change the existing school education system of simultaneous instruction that efficiently improves children's academic performance. While laws regulate everything from teacher training to the content and number of hours of classes in schools, many teachers are actually struggling as well. We would like to not only talk about ideals, but if it is difficult to change within schools, we would like to practice the necessary future education and learning outside of schools, ask questions to society, create a movement, and then utilize this movement within the existing school education system.
In the Research on Individually Optimal Learning, with the support of corporate - municipal and individual supporters, has launched a learning platform called “LEARN” where children - parents and teachers can learn about their respective issues and conduct educational and research activities throughout Japan. LEARN is derived from the initial letters of Learn, Enthusiastically, Actively, Realistically, and Naturally. The coexistence of these five words in the program is evident in the coexistence of activities with a variety of axes. We are convinced that by creating a place where various children can interact with each other, new and diverse learning directions will emerge. The program for children and their parents covers a wide range of subjects, and provides learning programs and ICT tools and environmental adjustments to meet individual challenges regardless of disability or willingness to learn. Its policy is to draw up scenarios in which children can learn without being aware of it, also removing the boundaries of “purpose,” “time,” “textbooks,” “planning,” “collaboration,” and so on. We also launched a teacher training program, LEARN Teachers Academy (LTA), which is designed to help teachers. LTA is also engaged in activities to promote a shift in teachers' views of education and abilities. Part of this program is implemented in cooperation with boards of education and teacher training colleges, and aims to connect with public education.
Until now, Japanese education has segregated children with disabilities within the context of special-needs education. LEARN's learning programs based on its educational policy and the provision of ICT tools and environmental adjustments facilitate the coexistence of children with different abilities. This wide range of activities must promote understanding of diversity and inclusive education, and at the same time, create children with the ability to live in a global society.
