LEARN : Research on Individually Optimal Learning

Japan’s current education system faces growing challenges. The traditional model of uniform, efficiency-driven instruction is tightly regulated by law, covering everything from teacher training to lesson content and hours. This rigid structure makes reform difficult and leaves many teachers struggling to meet students’ diverse needs.

At LEARN, we believe that change can begin outside the formal school system. Rather than just discussing ideals, we implement new approaches to learning in alternative environments, sharing these practices with society to create momentum for systemic reform.

Through our Donated Research Division for Personalized and Optimized Learning, we have established a learning platform called LEARN, supported by companies, local governments, and individual donors. The name stands for Learn, Enthusiastically, Actively, Realistically, and Naturally—five diverse but interconnected values. LEARN embraces a wide variety of coexisting learning methods, offering inclusive spaces where diverse learners interact and new directions in education naturally emerge.

Our programs for children and families respond flexibly to a wide range of needs. Regardless of disability or motivation, we carefully assess each child’s situation and provide individualized support through appropriate ICT tools and customized learning environments. We break away from conventional frameworks—such as fixed goals, schedules, textbooks, and rigid plans—to create learning experiences that children engage with naturally and intuitively.

To support educators, we have launched the LEARN Teachers Academy (LTA), a professional development program that encourages educators to rethink their approaches to teaching and learning. LTA has begun forming partnerships with boards of education and teacher training universities, allowing it to connect meaningfully with the public education system.

In contrast to Japan’s historical approach of separating students with disabilities into special needs education, LEARN promotes inclusive practices. Our programs, ICT tools, and environment design foster co-learning among children with varied abilities. These efforts advance diversity awareness and inclusive education, while helping to cultivate the skills children need to thrive in a global society.
