International Security Studies

What kind of world do we want to live in ?
We have two goals: to study international security, but also to envision it for Japan’s policy making. With the security environment surrounding Japan becoming ever more severe, interest in security has certainly increased. However, it seems to me that we are still in a state of limbo as to how we should be involved in the issue of security. It is also not uncommon for ideological conflicts to arise over security issues, making constructive dialogue difficult.
I use the word "vision" because I want to challenge this situation. In order to do so, there must be a final vision that can be shared by everyone to some extent, overcoming differences in positions on individual security policies. Because of this belief, we are not only about classical security theory research and international relations research, but also about values and people's perception of these values.
In addition, a deep understanding of the concept of deterrence targets is necessary for security policy to function. From this perspective, our research also covers the military and security of Eurasian countries such as Russia. Here, in addition to traditional regional research methods, we also actively utilize new research methods such as satellite image analysis and big data analysis.
My core area of expertise is Russian security policy studies. In other words, I am somewhere between regional studies (Russian studies) and security studies. What I do every day, for example, is to read every single newspaper and magazine published by the Russian military. Recently, I have also started using satellite imagery to observe Russian military objects. I used to be able to visit arms exhibitions held in Russia, but since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine, I no longer have such chance. In this way, my research style is to observe and analyze those who are reluctant to reveal themselves to me. It is neither orthodox academic research nor policy-oriented research. Somehow, I feel like I am continuing my free research during my never-ending summer vacation.
