Innovation Driven by Quantum Dot Science and Technology

Quantum dots (QDs) have emerged as a core technology underpinning next-generation photonics and quantum devices, with practical applications rapidly expanding to quantum dot displays, quantum dot lasers, high-sensitivity sensors, and many other fields. In recent years, alongside conventional epitaxial quantum dots, colloidal quantum dots have attracted increasing attention because of their compatibility with low-cost, large-area fabrication processes, opening new opportunities in information and communication technologies, sensing, energy, and related applications. At the same time, significant scientific and technological challenges remain to be addressed, including the development of high-quality material synthesis and processing technologies, advanced characterization methods, environmentally benign materials, defect reduction through surface ligand engineering, and improved stability under ambient conditions.

Against this background, this Endowed Research Lab was established in July 2026 with the aim of advancing education and research at the University of Tokyo while strengthening Japan’ s international competitiveness in quantum dot science and technology through the enhancement of TOPPAN’ s next-generation device integration and nanoparticle technologies.

The Lab integrates the University of Tokyo’ s long-standing expertise in epitaxial and colloidal quantum dots, quantum optical metrology, and quantum device technologies with TOPPAN’ s strengths in the synthesis, processing, and application of nanoparticle materials, particularly colloidal quantum dots. Through this collaboration, we promote research spanning the entire innovation pipeline—from the fundamental science of quantum dots, nanomaterials, and nanostructures to device engineering and practical implementation in society. In parallel, the Lab is committed to educating the next generation of researchers and engineers who will lead future advances in quantum science and technology and contribute to the creation of new industrial sectors.

Over the next five years, the Lab will pursue research on advanced materials, processing technologies, and quantum optical characterization aimed at enhancing the performance and quality of epitaxial quantum dots, colloidal quantum dots, and related nanomaterials. Furthermore, we will accelerate the practical deployment of quantum dot devices for emerging applications, including photonic–electronic convergence and quantum technologies, while fostering new industrial opportunities based on these technological advances. Through open innovation driven by academia–industry collaboration, the Lab seeks to advance quantum dot science and technology and to translate its achievements into innovations that will support the information infrastructure of future society.
